What is this?

Sloth.City is a hobbyist-operated public access Unix system. It offers free shell accounts to anyone who would like to build a webpage, chat online, write software, or just fiddle around on an old-fashioned shared box.

Currently we offer the following features to all users (but are quickly adding more):

• A mailbox at $YOURNAME@sloth.city
• A public web directory at https://sloth.city/~$YOURNAME
• A public gopher directory at gopher://sloth.city/1/~$YOURNAME, if that’s your thing
• Access to compilers and interpreters for a number of major programming languages
• Classic games like NetHack, and new ones like Botany

For the time being the system should be presumed unstable as it is still in its early days. Anything may change at any time, but you are free to join and poke around while I’m setting up. Everyone is welcome! You don’t even have to like sloths (but it helps).

How to join

Before trying to join, please read our code of conduct.

We accept new account requests over SSH. Connect as new@sloth.city and follow the instructions.

On any computer running a recent version of Windows, macOS, GNU/Linux, or BSD, you can do this as follows:

1. Open a terminal window ("Command Prompt" on Windows).
2. Type ssh new@sloth.city and press the Enter key.

If you run into problems with signup, you can request help from operator@sloth.city.

All signup requests are manually reviewed, so you may not get a response at once. Please remember that this is just one guy with a computer, and be patient like the sloth. 🦥
